Durban Cathedral Church
This Church building is one of South Africa’s National Monuments, and great care to not damage the existing building structure. The main reasons for specifying the VRV system were - very little air conditioning equipment was to be visible, much easier to install than the chiller, the ability to have individual control while saving on electrical consumption and maintenance cost were of concern to the church
Emmanuel Cathedral Presbytery Church
This Historic Cathedral Church situated in the centre of Durban is an existing building undergoing renovations, the unspoilt exterior of red face brick is crowned with elegant gothic spires. The church has never had air conditioning installed due to the design and layout of this old colonial building.
The consulting engineer and client were looking for an air conditioning system that was both flexible and would not detract from the looks and ease of installation and not damage the existing building.
The Daikin VRV K-series system was initially designed and specified for the project, however due to many condensing units being visible, the project was changed to a water cooled chiller system as the a compact system was seen as the only way to meet the client and archietects request.
With the launch of the new VRV II series in South Africa, the consultant saw the advantages of the New VRV II system, the water cooled system was replaced by the VRV II system.

The Daikin VRV II system was seen as the only way to install an air conditioning system that would not be detrimental to this historic church, as the system had to fit into the design and layout of the complex column and beam structures.
The area’s that have been air conditioned are the basement level, ground floor, first floor, second floor and the loft of the church.
