World Expo 2005 Belgian and New Zealand pavilions in Japan sponsored by Daikin.
Celebrating Nature’s Wisdom
The first universal exhibition of the new millennium is taking place in Japan till 25 September 2005. The site’s setting amid the woodlands surrounding the cities of Nagakute and Seto in the Aichi Prefecture emphasises the fair’s ecological theme of “nature’s wisdom.” Some 126 countries and organisations will play host to an estimated 15 million visitors.
Breaking with the past
This World Expo presented designers with special challenges. In a break with the past, the buildings to house the exhibits are not temporary structures. The pavilions are multi-purpose buildings conforming to the topography of the local countryside and built to last beyond the exhibition itself.
The technical challenges associated with climate control in such a pavilion are considerable: the outdoor climate is hot and humid, while indoors there is a high density of people requiring high volumes of fresh air, in addition to the heat generated by projectors and lighting systems. The Belgian and New Zealand pavilions turned to Daikin for sponsorship and assistance in addressing these challenges. Tailor made air handling solutions have been developed, which are connected to the district cooling.
Humankind and nature: building a sustainable relationship
The Belgian pavilion spotlights the way Belgian artists throughout history have used nature in their work. A star attraction of the exhibition is Réné Magritte’s “Empire of Light.” New Zealand is focusing on the link between the country’s natural beauty and the creative and technological sophistication of its people.
