denn's Biomarkt implements an all-in-one solution for heating, cooling and air-conditioning 100th Conveni-pack is being installed in Germany

Intelligent use of waste heat
The waste heat from refrigeration cabinets used in food retailing is valuable energy which often remains unused. An intelligent use of this waste heat can save both energy and costs. In 2007, Daikin Airconditioning Germany GmbH launched its Conveni-pack as the first mass-produced all-in-one system that uses all waste heat generated through refrigeration heat supermarket premises. The 100th Conveni-pack in Germany is currently being put into operation in a branch of denn's Biomarkt (an organic supermarket chain). The company now has 24 branches equipped with Conveni-pack systems.

“We wanted to find a solution that would not just address one aspect of the supermarket but one that would offer an integrated approach for cooling, heating and air-conditioning – a solution completely in line with our ecological way of thinking because we respect nature, the environment and its cycles. The Conveni-pack is therefore the right solution for us. It is well adapted to our overall concept and requires little floor space. In the branches where it is already installed, it has proved to be sustainable. With the Conveni-pack, we can do without fossil fuels and also benefit from a significant energy saving of 20-30% and a reduction in CO2 in comparison with older branches still using conventional units,” reported Torsten Meiler, the manager of the building management department. “denn's Biomarkt always acts with the environment in mind and our co-operation with Daikin underlines out commitment to an environmentally-compatible way of living – today, tomorrow and in the future.”

The denn's Biomarkt branch in Herzogenaurach was the first one to install a first-generation Conveni-pack system in 2009. A total of four denn's Biomarkt supermarkets were fitted out with the first-generation Conveni-pack. The second generation, with new compressor technology and a new cooling agent management system, has been on the market since May 2010. As a result of using the R-410A refrigerant, the system ensures highly efficient operation with low energy consumption. In comparison with the previous model using the
R-407C refrigerant, the new Conveni-pack reduces the running costs further by an average of 18%. To date, 20 branches of denn's Biomarkt operate the new Conveni-Pack.

The right solution
The Conveni-pack integrates not only high and low temperature refrigeration but also air-conditioning, heating and cooling in a single-system solution. Almost all system components have been designed so that they just need to be plugged in which greatly reduces the time and work involved in installation. It is a modular system and, with regard to location, climate region and the possibility to alter a shop's concept, is highly flexible. It uses an outdoor, inverter-regulated unit. This eliminates the need for an indoor refrigeration machine room and boiler room. Conventional oil or gas heating are also no longer necessary.

With the 100th Conveni-pack system, which is now being installed in Germany, there will be an annual saving of 1,000 tons of CO2. This is equivalent to the CO2 absorbed annually by c. 33,334 trees. In 2009, the Conveni-pack was awarded the “Heating and Cooling Prize” by the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservancy and Nuclear Reactor Safety. In Europe, a total of around 1,000 Conveni-packs have been installed.
